5 must watch Indian TV shows

There has always been a prominent criticism of the very popular Saas Bahu Sagas on Indian Television. Majority of the population, especially the youth often wish that the standards of Indian TV series rise up to the level of TV series made in other countries. There is obviously a long way to go here but if you observe closely, we do have some intelligent shows that one can watch with equal interest.

Probably few in number, but read on to know 5 must watch Indian Television shows :

Byomkesh Bakshi

Deeply inspired by the famous Sherlock Homes, Byomkesh Bakshi is a fictional detective in Bengali Literature created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. In the TV adaptation, Rajit Kapoor has played the role of Byomkesh Bakshi. The series ran from 1993-1997 constituting about 37 episodes. With some very smart scripts amalgamated with Indian rawness, great background score and much needed support of side actors, calling Byomkesh Bakshi the Indian Sherlock can be justified to a good extent.

Dekh Bhai Dekh

The very first thing you observe is the catchy tune sung by none other than the very famous, Udit Narayan. The chorus vrooms in – ” Dekh Bhai Dekh ho Dekh bhai Dekh”. One of the most popular comedy shows India has ever produced, Dekh Bhai Dekh is complete family entertainment that showcases the life of a joint family of three generations living in a big ancestral home in the suburbs of Mumbai. Some very talented actors like Shekhar Suman, Farida Jalal and Sushma Seth make you get addicted to the show. The show started in 1993 and was directed by Anand Mahendroo & produced by Jaya Bachchan.

Office Office

Centering around the role of Mussadilal played by the veteran Pankaj Kapoor, Office Office is a family show that is based on rampant corruption and bribery in public offices. Supported by other fine actors like Deven Bhojani, Asawari Joshi, Sanjay Mishra and Vrajesh Hirjee, the 1st episode was aired in September 2001. The show is directed by Rajiv Mehra.

Shrimaanj Shrimati

Shrimaan Shrimati started in 1995 and was first aired on Doordarshan before eventually moving to Sab TV. The plot revolved around 2 couples(main characters) – Keshav Kulkarni & Kokila Kulkarni and Prema & Dilruba. With flirtatious relationship between Keshav and Prema on one hand and Dilruba and Kokila on the other, it is a treat to watch the silly yet funny incidents planned out to impress one another. Side characters like Gokhale and Chintu were again a treat to watch. The show was directed by Rajan Waghdhare and constituted about 143 episodes.

Flop Show

Again a very famous sitcom, Flop show was written and directed by satirical humourist Jaspal Bhatti, who also interestingly played the central character as well. His offscreen wife Savita Bhatti played his onscreen wife as well and acted in all the episodes. The show was made in 1989 and constituted 10 episodes all of which showcased the funnier side of daily socio-economic situations faced by the common man. The background score too is highly catchy and interesting. Side actor in the form of Vivek Shauq has added extra value to the show.
